28th September 2006 - New Meritor® MS-13-175 Single-Reduction Drive Axle Now Available to Meet Changing Needs of European Original Equipment Market

Offer increased capacity, higher efficiency, increased structural rigidity, reduced weight

ArvinMeritor’s newest single-reduction hypoid drive axle features – the MS-13-175 carrier – has been designed to deliver increased capacity, higher efficiency and improved structural rigidity to customers, all at a reduced weight.  The new axles are the company’s latest product generation for European long haul operations.

“This new axles replace our current 177 axle, which have for years been the workhorse of the commercial vehicle industry in Europe,” said Brad Arnold, vice president and general manager, Commercial Vehicle Systems (CVS) axle and driveline business.  “This stronger, lighter axle has been designed to be even more reliable and provide operators with extended, trouble-free miles for years to come.”

The new axle has been totally redesigned to meet the unique competitive needs of European long haul operators, Arnold said.  ArvinMeritor focused on operator requirements for weight reduction and durability, while addressing the strong demand for overall improvements in drivetrain efficiency brought on by the new 2007 engines, which must meet Euro 4 emissions targets.

The new MS-13-175 axle features a Gross Axle Weight Rating (GAWR) of 13 tonnes with Gross Combination Weight (GCW) capability of 44 tonnes.  It is rated to handle input power up to 650 hp, input torque up to 2500 Nm, and retarder torque up to 3200 Nm.  It is available in nine different ratios from 2.64 to 6.17, including QuiteRide options.  Other available features include either a cast or fabricated housing and a standard driver-controlled differential lock.

Additional benefits of the new axle include:

Reduced noise generation and lower load-dependent losses – a result of the newly-designed coarse-pitch gearsets.
Stiffer, more robust design – to handle the new ultra-high retarder torques.
Reduced weight – through a 30-percent part-count reduction for improved vehicle fuel economy and new assembly processes for increased rigidity.
Enhanced efficiency – with improved gearset geometry and reduced parasitic losses for increased fuel economy.
In addition, the engineering changes to the new axles have resulted in increased B10 life expectancy of the new axles from 900,000 km up to 1.25 million km.

Since 1909 ArvinMeritor has been leading the heavy-duty axle market with reliable, long-life axles and advanced gearing technology. The company's more than 90 years of axle-producing experience has led the group to become the world's largest independent manufacturer of heavy-duty truck axles for a vast range of vehicle applications, including front drive, front non-drive, single rear, tandem drive, tridem drive and trailer axles.
