15th September 2006 - University of Bradford Offers Engineering Quality Improvement Masters Programme

Recruitment is now open for the January 2007 Intake for the University of Bradford Engineering Quality Improvement Work-based Research Masters Programme

The Bradford MSc programme in Engineering Quality Improvement provides a framework for developing technical maturity and enhanced engineering competence for today's generation of upcoming engineers. The programme is both flexible, to suit part-time candidacy, and academically rigorous, reflecting the technical difficulties of engineering in the 21st Century.

The Bradford MSc programme is by research, which means that the Delegate, guided by a Bradford University academic, completes a work-based project that has both academic research value and real benefit to the Company.  The programme philosophy is based on the idea of avoiding failure modes in design, guiding engineering professionals to learn about, and succeed in “finding ways of doing their jobs better”, through ingenuity and innovation of thought.

The complex areas of braking and friction pair development are ideal sources of research activities which target improved robustness in design through failure mode avoidance and the development of long-term countermeasures to both failure modes and noise.  Examples of previous research projects include:

 •

“Investigation of the Effects of Suspension System Stiffness during Braking” – Jos Klaps, 1999

 •

“Right First Time Production Releases” – Paul Cash, 2003

 •

“An Investigation Into Brake Pedal Feel on a Luxury Saloon Car” - Mark Hudson, 2004

 • “An Investigation into the Application of Design for Six-Sigma methodology to Automotive Product Design” - Brett Hallam, 2005

About the BEQIC MSc Programme

The MSc programme in Engineering Quality Improvement was launched with Cohort 1 in January 1994.  Since that time, over 150 delegates from Europe and the US have registered on the programme from Ford, Jaguar, Visteon, Standard Products, Tallent Engineering, and Albion Pressed Metal, Alcatel Submarine Networks, TT Electronics, Lafarge.  To date 85 Delegates have graduated from the Bradford MSc Programme. A good number of these are now in senior positions within their companies.  Over the years the Programme has been highly successful in generating enthusiasm in the Delegates for the research based education. This is illustrated by the 18 Delegates returning to Bradford to pursue part time PhD’s of which 6 have completed.

The Programme’s strong track record of success is due to a well established framework for learning and monitoring progress, tailored academic guidance and supervision, and active company mentoring. The flexible nature of the programme and the integration with the job function provides opportunities for efficient learning and manageable off-site commitment. The programme is broad in scope, and it is intended for delegates from all engineering areas, from concept design, virtual engineering and testing, processes and methodologies, to supply chain and production.
