20th July 2005 - 'Right to Repair Act' Gains Six More Supporters

31 Congressmen Now on Board as Co-Sponsors

Six more congressmen have come out in support of the Motor Vehicle Owners Right to Repair Act (HR2048), it was announced today by Kathleen Schmatz, President and CEO of the Automotive Aftermarket Industry Association (AAIA).

“We want to thank these six congressmen for supporting this very important piece of legislation that not only benefits every small business owner in the automotive aftermarket but also benefits every consumer who owns a vehicle,” said Schmatz.  “Every week, the 'Right to Repair Act' seems to be picking up more and more support and we foresee that continuing in the next few months.”

The six new legislators now supporting the Right to Repair Act are Reps. Roger Wicker, R-Miss.; Ray LaHood, R-Ill.; William Lacy Clay, D-Mo.; Edward Markey, D-Mass.; George Radanovich, R-Calif.; and James McGovern, D-Mass.   A truly bi-partisan bill, of the 31 congressmen who currently support the bill, 15 are Democrats, 15 are Republicans and one is independent.

The 'Right to Repair Act' would require the car companies to make the same service information and tools capabilities available to independents that they provide their franchised dealer networks. Architects of the Right to Repair Act added new language to clarify that car company trade secrets are protected unless that information is provided to the franchised new car dealer. The new language also clarifies the responsibilities of the Federal Trade Commission in enforcing the bill’s requirements.
