30th March 2005 - Bendix Next-Generation Antilock Braking Systems Added to Select Peterbilt Vehicles

Scalable System Includes Top-of-the-Line Advanced ABS with Electronic Stability

Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems LLC today announced the addition of its next-generation antilock braking system technology, ABS-6, as a new option for select Peterbilt Class 8 vehicles beginning in April.

The scalable Bendix ABS-6 technology is available in standard, premium and advanced configurations to address the full range of fleet needs.

The top-end configuration, ABS-6 Advanced with ESP (Electronic Stability Program), available in June for the Model 387 and September for the Models 379, 386, 385, 378 and 357, gives tractor-trailer operators a highly effective ABS-based stability system and traction control that responds to both low- and high-friction surface stability scenarios. This full stability system is capable of mitigating rollovers, jackknifes and loss of control. The system may detect a vehicle’s impending loss of stability before the typical driver senses it, and automatically intervenes by selectively applying tractor and trailer brakes as well as by reducing the engine throttle. It is the recommended system for all power vehicles, for fleets that operate in a full range of driving conditions, and especially for tractors pulling trailers.

“In choosing Bendix ABS-6, Peterbilt and the PACCAR group recognized the unmatched performance of our electronic stability technology and its ability to dramatically and positively impact highway safety. The choice also brings opportunities for increased profitability and operational efficiencies to Peterbilt’s vehicle operators,” said Jim McClelland, vice president, original equipment sales, Bendix Commercial Vehicle Systems.  “We’re delighted with this outstanding opportunity to once again partner with Peterbilt to offer this exceptional advanced technology.  We appreciate their continued commitment and selection of our products.”

ABS-6 Standard is available as a no-cost option that provides core ABS control and robust diagnostic capabilities, such as traditional blink codes, the patented Bendix “Chuff” test and comprehensive computer-based diagnostics. An upgrade to ABS-6 Premium adds Bendix Smart ATC™ traction control, enhanced diagnostic and prognostic capabilities, and customization options to the package.

Bendix developed ABS-6 in conjunction with its European parent, Knorr-Bremse. The system builds upon the familiar North American brake system with proven algorithms and sensors that deliver robust capabilities previously believed to only be available through electronically controlled braking systems. Among the key benefits is ease of maintenance through the use of familiar components (i.e. sensors, relays) and system architecture.
